"Do you know the amount of damage that can be done in twenty minutes?" ~Rory

Story summary: With the English project throwing them together Tristan just might get the chance to show Rory what they have is far from over.

Disclaimer: I do not own the characters in this story. The characters belong to the WB show Gilmore Girls.

INT: GILMORE HOUSE-NIGHT

Lorelai is sitting at the kitchen table while Rory moves frantically around the house picking things up and stashing them in cupboards and closets. She picks up a blouse off the back of a chair and heaves it into the oven.

LORELAI: I’m gonna go out on a limb here, but flammable blouse…gas oven….bad combo.

RORY: Right.

Rory retrieves the blouse from the oven, looks around for somewhere to stash it and finally decides to stick it in the refrigerator along with some table knick knacks.

LORELAI: Yeah…that’s much better.

RORY: I don’t see you helping…so mocking is not allowed.

LORELAI: That’s right ruin a girl’s fun. Remind me again…why are you trying to pick up sixteen years worth of clutter in one afternoon?

RORY: We’re having company.

LORELAI: Company who?

RORY: All right…I’ll tell you, but you have to promise me you are not going to read more into this than there really is. Do you understand?

LORELAI: Oh…intrigue. Go on.

RORY: It’s Tristan. But…and I’m stressing this point…it’s just to study.

LORELAI: Since when do you *study* with Tristan? I thought you two were history.

RORY: We are this is completely beyond my control.

LORELAI: How so?

RORY: Mr. Medina paired us together for a project.

LORELAI: And you’re okay with this?

RORY:  I’m…*dealing* with it.

Lorelai picks up her work planner off the desk and starts flipping pages.

LORELAI: Okay. I’m free most weekends up until April…but after that it’s touch and go.

RORY: What are you talking about?

LORELAI: For the wedding.

RORY: What wedding?

LORELAI: You and Tristan of course.

RORY: Very funny. Contrary to what you may think. I am over Tristan…completely.

LORELAI: We’ll see.

RORY: What is that supposed to mean?

LORELAI: Nothing.

RORY: No. You wanted to say something…so say it.

LORELAI: I don’t want to be the meddling mom.

RORY: You have my permission. Meddle.

LORELAI: Okay…but just because you gave me permission...This is the way I see it. Tristan is a very *determined* man. I think he might seize this opportunity to get back into your life. There you go…meddling done.

RORY: You’re wrong.

LORELAI: Not often. And definitely not about this. You want my advice?

RORY: Probably not.

LORELAI: Well…I’m going to give it to you anyway sweetheart. Do everything in your power to make sure the two of you are not alone together.

RORY: That’s why I invited him to the house. I figure with you here there’s safety in numbers.

LORELAI: Yes…1+1+1=3…a safe number…but lets try another one 3-1=2.

RORY: You’re not going to be here?

LORELAI: I’m sorry sweetie but I made plans with Sookie tonight. She is after all planning a wedding and I am her maid of honor. I have responsibilities.

RORY: This is bad. Why didn’t you tell me you weren’t going to be here?

LORELAI: I didn’t realize we had to check in with each other.

RORY: Yes!...because now in less than a half-hour Tristan will be here and you won’t and oh my God this is such a huge…huge…

LORELAI: Mistake?

RORY: I was going to say mess.

LORELAI: So call in the troops.

RORY: The troops?

LORELAI: Lane or better yet Dean. Tristan would never try something with Dean in the house.

RORY: Don’t be too sure about that.

LORELAI: Are we keeping secrets?

RORY: Only the embarrassing ones.

LORELAI: But those are the best ones. Have I taught you nothing? Share and share alike. Remember?

RORY: Believe me. I’m doing you a favor by *not* telling you about every time Tristan has made my resolve crumble.

LORELAI: And by resolve crumbling…Did you mean…

RORY: No! That’s so *not* what I meant. Mind out of the gutter please.

LORELAI: Sorry…but the last time I let someone crumble my resolve you were the result. So you can understand the confusion.

DOORBELL RINGS

RORY: (panicking) He’s early.

LORELAI: Relax honey. I’m sure it’s just Sookie. She was swinging by the house to pick me up. Now scoot. You’ve got a couple of phone calls to make.

RORY: Right.

Rory heads towards her bedroom as Lorelai goes to the front door and opens it. Sure enough it is Sookie. Sookie smiles at Lorelai and hugs her.

LORELAI: Come on in sunshine.

SOOKIE: I love it when you call me that.

LORELAI: Well you’re a happy person. It seemed to fit.

SOOKIE: Exactly. I think people having pet names for each other is so cute. Don’t you?

LORELAI: It’s not exactly a pet name Sookie. More like a term of endearment. Pet names are for couples. I’m sure Jackson must have a cute, witty pet name for you .

SOOKIE: It’s embarrassing.

LORELAI: Oh come on…it can’t be that bad.

SOOKIE: Well you know how he loves vegetables.

LORELAI: Right.

SOOKIE: He calls me his little…eggplant.

LORELAI: Interesting. Do we know why?

SOOKIE: Something about resembling one. I didn’t dig for details. He likes it…I live with it.

LORELAI: So what do you call him?

SOOKIE: My big dill pickle.

LORELAI: Do I want to know why?

SOOKIE: No.

LORELAI: Fair enough. So where are we going tonight?

SOOKIE: We are getting the final fitting on my dress. And then I thought I would treat you to dinner.

LORELAI: Sounds good. Let me just tell Rory we’re leaving and I’m all yours.

SOOKIE: Thanks Lorelai.

LORELAI: Don’t mention it.

Lorelai opens the door to Rory’s bedroom and enters just as she is hanging up the phone.

LORELAI: Any luck?

RORY: Lane will be here in an hour and Dean is just getting off work...so in ten minutes or so he’ll be on his way over.

LORELAI: So with any luck Tristan will be late and you’ll only have to endure twenty or so minutes of just his company. Problem solved.

RORY: Do you know the amount of damage that can be done in twenty minutes?

LORELAI: Do you know how much you’re making me wish I had a son right now?

RORY: I’m sorry. I’ll be fine.

LORELAI: Okay. Just remember we keep the sharp knives in the far right hand drawer.

RORY: If all else fails.

LORELAI: I have to go now. Are you sure you’re going to be alright?

RORY: It’s alright mom…Go.

Lorelai closes the bedroom door and leaves. Rory lies back down on her bed with a heavy sigh.

Lorelai and Sookie are just getting ready to head out the front door when the doorbell rings. Lorelai opens it and sees Tristan. Tristan is wearing a khaki green sweater that make his eyes stand out and well worn Levis that fit him perfectly. His hair is messy and tousled looking but it works for him. As he sees Lorelai he smiles a disarming smile and Lorelai reacting, slams the door.

SOOKIE: Sweetie? What did you do that for?

LORELAI: That boy is not coming in my house. No sane mother would let *that* into her house to be alone with her daughter.

DOORBELL RINGS AGAIN.

Rory walks out of her bedroom headed for the front door when she sees Sookie and her mother standing there.

RORY: What’s going on?

DOORBELL RINGS AGAIN.

LORELAI: Um…door to door salesman. Pesky little buggers.

Rory walks past her mother and opens the door. Tristan is standing there looking slightly confused.

RORY: Hi. Come in.

Tristan slowly walks in…half expecting Lorelai to slam the door on him again.

LORELAI: I’m sorry…I…uh…reflex problem. Had it for ages.

SOOKIE: We should go now Lorelai.

LORELAI: Right. Rory you have my number…in case something…*crumbles.*

RORY: Yes…but I’m sure everything will be non-crumbly…don’t worry.

Lorelai and Sookie leave the house and Rory closes the door. Hesitant to face Tristan she slowly turns around.

Rory takes one look at Tristan and her skin begins to warm. He smiles at her and she feels her insides start turning up the heat. With a huge amount of willpower and resolve she steels herself to be alone with him. Telling herself she can do it.

RORY: I…I set up a work area in the living room. I thought we would be more comfortable there.

TRISTAN: Lead the way.

Rory heads into the living room and Tristan follows, she points him towards the couch and he takes a seat.

RORY: Would you like something to drink?

TRISTAN: What do you have?

RORY: Soda, water, coffee and some really bad sun tea.

TRISTAN: A soda sounds good.

RORY: I’ll be right back.

TRISTAN: I’ll help you.

RORY: That’s okay.

TRISTAN: I insist.

Tristan follows Rory as she walks into the kitchen. She opens the refrigerator to get a couple of sodas and Tristan sees the blouse, he reaches in a pulls it out. Rory tries to cover.

RORY: Well that’s unusual. I wonder how that got there.

TRISTAN: Part of a very strange Gilmore ritual I’m sure.

Rory grabs the blouse from Tristan.

RORY: We’re not that strange.

TRISTAN: Have to say the jury is still out on that one. Your mom almost took off a finger when she slammed the front door in my face tonight.

RORY: She said she was sorry.

TRISTAN: And I still have ten digits…so we’re good.

Rory hands Tristan a soda and their fingers touch. One huge electric spark sails through the both of them. Tristan slowly takes the can prolonging the contact between them.

RORY: Is it hot in here?

Rory looks over at Tristan who looks amazing. He looks directly into her eyes and his voice takes on a sexy, smoldering tone.

TRISTAN: A little.

Tristan moves a step closer to Rory until he is in her personal space. As he starts to move closer Rory puts out a hand to stop him.

RORY: I think we should probably talk about some things before we get to work.

TRISTAN: Such as?

RORY: I don’t know what you expected to happen here tonight Tristan. But I invited you over to work on our project…nothing more.

TRISTAN: ( a little defeated) I understand.

RORY: Good. It’s going to be a very long two weeks if that’s not perfectly clear to you.

TRISTAN: I get it. You’re not interested in me. It’s not a problem.

Rory can tell she has wounded Tristan’s pride.

RORY: Tristan…

TRISTAN: We should probably get to work. I have a date later.

RORY: A date?

TRISTAN: Is that a problem?

RORY: No. No problem.

TRISTAN: Good. Cause it would be a very long two weeks if it was.

Rory walks out of the kitchen and back into the living room with Tristan in tow. They both sit down on the couch. Rory reaches for her copy of Romeo and Juliet.

RORY: I started re-reading this to try and get an idea for our project. But I came up with zero. How about you?

TRISTAN: I thought we could do debate papers. You know…each pick a side, write up our arguments and then finish up with a conclusion at the end based on the strongest argument.

RORY: Yeah…I like that idea. Do want the fated lovers or misguided ones?

TRISTAN: I want the argument for fated love.

RORY: Really?

TRISTAN: Yes. Because I believe if you’re fated to be together…nothing will stop that. Plain and simple.

Tristan is looking into Rory’s eyes as he says this and she gets the message loud and clear.

RORY: And common sense says that even fate has to bend to free will.

TRISTAN: I didn’t realize you were so cynical and jaded concerning love.

RORY: I’m realistic. I realize that circumstances are not always in our control. That the saying love will find away is very selfish. You can’t trample on other people’s feelings to get what or who you want.

TRISTAN: And you think that’s what I did?

RORY: That’s not what I said.

TRISTAN: But it was implied. Maybe we should clear the air. If you have an issue with my behavior or our past relationship…share.

RORY: That’s dangerous territory and you know it.

TRISTAN: I’m game if you are.

RORY: This is a bad idea.

Tristan leans closer to Rory and almost in a whisper he asks…

TRISTAN: Why are you so afraid to level with me?

Rory is taken aback by his question and tears start forming in the corners of her eyes. Bravely she looks at him and smiles.

RORY: How am I supposed to answer that?

TRISTAN: Honestly.  Because for weeks you led me to believe that we had this future…so against my better judgment…I let myself fall in love with you. I thought you fell in love with me too. Tell me Rory…was I wrong?

As Rory is about to answer the doorbell rings. Tristan sits back frustrated as Rory practically jumps off the couch to answer the door.

When Rory comes back she has Dean with her and Tristan is more than a little surprised…he is in fact…angry. He hates the game Rory is playing with him.

Dean is also surprised to see Tristan.

DEAN: You didn’t tell me *he* was going to be here.

TRISTAN: Join the club.

RORY: We have a school project together.

TRISTAN: That’s right…we drew straws for partners…and I lost. Maybe we should do this some other time Rory, since you obviously have other plans for tonight.

DEAN: Sounds good to me. If we hurry we can catch a late movie.

DOORBELL RINGS AGAIN

Tristan starts putting away his notebook and pens in his back pack. Rory remains rooted to her spot…watching him.

RORY: Dean, can you get that?

DEAN: Sure. Okay.

As Dean walks away Tristan lights into Rory.

TRISTAN: You are unbelievable!

RORY: Excuse me?

TRISTAN: I can’t believe I keep subjecting myself to this. I’m such an idiot.

Tristan starts to move past Rory and to the front door.

RORY: Tristan please wait.

TRISTAN: Save it Rory. Your actions speak loud and clear. We’re done…we’re through. End of story. You don’t have to keep beating me over the head with Dean. When you pull crap like this it just makes it that much easier for me to let go. So…I hope that’s what you really want…me to let go.

RORY: I want us to be friends.

TRISTAN: I don’t look at you and see *just a friend.*

RORY: This is exactly why I was against crossing that line in the first place.

Rory and Tristan don’t realize that Dean and Lane have entered the room.

DEAN: Is something going on with the two of you? Cause I’m getting a really bad feeling here.

TRISTAN: I was just leaving.

RORY: We were just having a slight disagreement.

TRISTAN: Yeah…Rory can be pretty pig-headed when she wants to.

Rory glares at Tristan.

RORY: Not wanting to do things your way does not make a person stubborn.

TRISTAN: Are we through here? Because I have better things to do then stand here and be ostracized by you.

RORY: You want to go? Fine…go.

Dean and Lane are standing watching the exchange with growing discomfort.

LANE: Maybe Dean and I should go. You two obviously have some issues to work out.

DEAN: I’m not leaving Rory here with *him.*

RORY: I’m fine Dean.

DEAN: (confused) You want me to leave?

Rory goes over and takes Dean’s hand and leads him to the front door.

LANE: (to Tristan) Bye. Sorry we didn’t really get a chance to meet. I’m sure you’re a real nice guy.

TRISTAN: Not if your asking Rory.

LANE: Right. Okay then. I’ll just be going.

As Rory and Dean are standing at the front door Lane comes walking up.

DEAN: (annoyed)  I don’t understand why you called and begged me to come over and now your blowing me off to do some project with bone-head in there.

RORY: I’m sorry Dean. I should have known working with Tristan wasn’t going to be easy. It’s just that this project is really important and if he and I don’t settle our differences we’ll never get it done.

DEAN: Is that really what’s going on here Rory?

RORY: ( a little guilty) Yes. It is. I promise. I’ll call you tomorrow.

Dean leans in and gives Rory a kiss. Rory opens the door to let him out.

DEAN: You need a ride home Lane?

LANE: That’s okay.

DEAN: If you need me for anything Rory…anything. Call me.

RORY: I will.

Dean shuts the door and leaves.

LANE: Are you ever going to tell Dean the truth?

RORY: Sometimes I think I am…but then I just think how much knowing the full truth would hurt him. Is that really necessary?

LANE: What about the blond in the living room? What are you going to do about him?

RORY: I have all the same questions, but unfortunately, no answers.

LANE: Well…good luck. He’s pretty easy on the eyes and oh my god…what a bod.

RORY: Not helping Lane.

LANE: Sorry. It’s just years of geeks with greasy hair in my life…I have to live vicariously through you.

Lane opens the door.

RORY: Thanks for coming over.

LANE: Your positive you want me to leave?

RORY: No. Not entirely. But I’m willing to risk it. Go…have a good night and I’ll call you tomorrow.

LANE: Stay strong Rory.

RORY: Okay.

INT: BRIDAL SHOP-NIGHT

Lorelai is sitting in the main showroom of the bridal shop flipping through a bridal magazine.

SOOKIE: (OC) Okay…I’m coming out and I want you to be completely honest.

LORELAI: Got it.

Sookie comes walking out of the dressing room in a beautiful white satin wedding gown. Lorelai immediately stands up.

LORELAI: (cont.) Oh…Sook…you look so…

SOOKIE: Big…I look big don’t I?

LORELAI: I was going to say breathtaking.

SOOKIE: Breathtaking? Really? You’re not just saying that?

LORELAI: Jackson is so going to be wrapped around your little finger for life after he sees you in that dress.

SOOKIE: You think so?

LORELAI: Absolutely.

Sookie looks at her self in the three-way mirror and smiles.

SOOKIE: Yeah…he is…isn’t he.

LORELAI: Jackson is a lucky man Sookie.

Sookie gives Lorelai a hug.

SOOKIE: You really are my best friend in the whole world Lorelai.

LORELAI: And I wouldn’t want it any other way. Best friends for life Sookie.

SOOKIE: Absolutely. And just think…if all goes well with Christopher…we could be switching roles.

LORELAI: I don’t know Sookie…I’m thinking the old saying applies to me…practically invented it for me. Always a bridesmaid…never a bride.

SOOKIE: You are not going to be an old maid Lorelai.

LORELAI: Yeah…come on it sounds like fun. You could ditch Jackson and we could be old maids together. We could live in my house with like fifty cats and scare the neighborhood kids.

SOOKIE: Do you know that’s not even slightly tempting sweetie?

LORELAI: A girl has to have dreams Sookie.

SOOKIE: You might want to revamp yours a little hon. Your time is coming. I can feel it.

LORELAI: Well  until then I’ll hang on to my reachable goals.

INT: GILMORE HOUSE-NIGHT

Rory walks back into the living room where Tristan is still standing prepared to go.

RORY: Are you still leaving?

TRISTAN: I don’t really see the point in staying.

RORY: We have a project to do.

TRISTAN: I understand that this is easy for you Rory…but I can’t stand here next to you in this room and not *feel* something.

RORY: What do you want me to do Tristan? We already tried switching partners and couldn’t. We’re stuck with each other so lets just make the best of it.

TRISTAN: You see that’s what I’m talking about. You feel *stuck* with me…while I feel like someone was on my side when they paired us for this project. Or at least I did. Now I’m not so sure.

RORY: I’m sorry…stuck was the wrong word. But I’m trying really hard here to *not* remember how being with you made me feel.

TRISTAN: Why?

RORY: What do you mean?

TRISTAN: I mean what is the point in fighting what you’re feeling? Is it for Dean? Because honestly…I don’t think so. I think you and Dean are far more over than you and me.

RORY: Dean and I are still together.

TRISTAN: In theory maybe.

RORY: In fact.

TRISTAN: You amaze me. You’re fighting so hard to stay away from what you really want that you can’t even acknowledge what you’re really feeling. Admit it Rory.

RORY: Why are you doing this Tristan? Why can’t you just accept that what we had is over?

TRISTAN: Look at me…I mean really look into my eyes.

RORY: No.

TRISTAN: Why not? Are you afraid of what you might see there…what you might finally realize?

Rory looks at Tristan…she doesn’t want to do as he says…but she is drawn into his eyes. She feels herself sinking…falling…losing perspective as he brings her closer to him. His face is inches from hers and she is sure he is about to kiss her, and she really wants him to. With his hands lightly touching both sides of her face he speaks barely above a whisper…but she can hear him…can feel his presence.

TRISTAN: I am head over heels in love with you Rory Gilmore. I hate it. And I’ve tried numerous ways to fight it. I am not your friend…I am your soul mate. And yes, I want to know you inside and out. I’m sorry if that frightens you…and I will probably live my life regretting being so honest with you. But those are the facts Rory. No one has ever meant as much to me as you do. Loving me is never going to be easy, so maybe you’re not up for the challenge. But I’m here and I’m yours. The thing is Rory you have to make a decision…do you want to love me…or let me go and possibly lose the one person in your life who would change your world?

With that said Tristan steps away from Rory and picks up his backpack. Rory is standing…stunned into silence.

TRISTAN: (cont.) I can’t do anything more. It’s up to you to decide if what we have is real and worth fighting for. I think it is.

Tristan turns and walks out of the living room and through the front door as tears start streaming down Rory’s face.
